Anxiety in children during a pandemic:

With COVID-19, our children's routines and relationships have significantly changed. Here are some ways parents and caregivers can cope with their child's stress and anxiety:
  • Help your child with labelling and accepting their emotions. Don't ignore their emotions or be afraid of them.
  • Listen to your child's worries and let them know you understand.
  • Teach your child calming self-talk techniques .
  • Be aware of your own anxiety and how you cope with it. Children learn through observation and modelling.
  • Keep things in perspective and monitor your child's exposure to the news. 
  • Direct your child's attention to things or activities that calm them.
  • Practice mindfulness (search YouTube videos)
  • Teach your child breathing techniques to utilize when they are anxious
  • Help your child in reaching out to family and friends by phone or internet
  • Help your child create a gratitude list 
  • Get active with your child outside or indoors while practicing physical distancing. ​​
  • Know when to reach out for help. If your child's anxiety seems overwhelming (i.e, if they are having trouble sleeping, eating or experience changes in the way they interact with others), get help. Don't be afraid to reach out during this difficult times.
